BUCKYVERSE

Research: Philosophers in Fuller's Corpus

Fuller was not a citation-builder; he engaged philosophers in three distinct ways. (1) As inherited lineage — the New England Transcendentalists (Emerson, Thoreau) entered through his great-aunt Margaret Fuller, Emerson's friend and co-founder of The Dial, whom Bucky reprinted ("Margaret Fuller's Prophecy") and treated as a personal "spiritual heritage." (2) As method/idiom — Korzybski's general semantics (language must mirror the structure of events) and Alfred North Whitehead (the source of Fuller's named "Whitehead's Dilemma") supplied the process-oriented, "no nouns, only verbs" outlook that the dictionary's editor classified outright as Fuller's Neo-Platonism. (3) As figures to correct or reframe — Descartes (whose 720° angular-topology discovery Fuller claimed to complete with the tetrahedron, and whose XYZ "Cartesian" coordinates he replaced with 60-degree coordination), Aristotle (blamed for the "practical philosophy" that ushered in 1,700 years of geocentric mis-seeing), and Newton vs. Einstein (Newton "a noun," Einstein "a verb"). Plato dominates raw counts but almost entirely as the geometric "Platonic solids," not the philosopher. His deepest, most affectionate affinity is Transcendentalist; his operative method is process-philosophical and general-semantic.

Method

Fuller's philosophical engagements (synthesis)

Genuinely engaged (argues with, builds on, or reframes):

Named-only / peripheral:

Interpretive shape: Editor E. J. Applewhite formally indexed Fuller's metaphysics under "Fuller, R.B.: His Neo-Platonism" and "Neo-Platonism," cross-referencing "Ideal vs. Real," "Reality as Structural Interaction of Principles," and "World as Idea in the Mind of God." So the through-line is coherent: a Transcendentalist temperament (Margaret Fuller/Emerson) + a process/general-semantics method (Whitehead/Korzybski, "only verbs") + a mathematical Neo-Platonism (eternal principles, ideal polyhedra) — defined against Cartesian coordinates, Aristotelian "practicality," and Newtonian static "nouns."

Evidence (cited quotes)

Margaret Fuller — BY Fuller (../../the_buckminster_fuller_reader/the_buckminster_fuller_reader.md, also in ../../ideas_and_integrities/ideas_and_integrities.md):

"I am including here a quotation from my great-aunt, Margaret Fuller… Margaret Fuller was co-founder with Emerson of Dial magazine, which she undertook as the first publishing medium to present the work of Emerson. She was also the first publisher of Thoreau's work…"

Margaret Fuller "Prophecy" — ABOUT Fuller (../../new_views_on_r_buckminster_fuller/index.md):

"By including a text of Margaret Fuller's in his book Ideas and Integrities, Fuller proves the importance of the spiritual heritage of his aunt Margaret. The short text forms the third chapter of the book… 'Margaret Fuller's Prophecy.'"
And the quoted line Bucky prized (../../we_are_all_astronauts/index.md): "Truth is the one great means by which alone progress can be essentially furthered. Truth is the nursing mother of genius…"

Emerson — ABOUT Fuller (../../american_dreamer/american_dreamer.md, Scott Eastham):

"I can, for instance, never long ignore the voice of Ralph Waldo Emerson as at least one of Fuller's intellectual progenitors—'The mind of Emerson,' asserts Harold Bloom… 'is the mind of America'…"

Emerson — ABOUT Fuller (../../cosmic_fishing/cosmic_fishing.md, Applewhite):

"Fuller's great-aunt was Emerson's friend, the redoubtable Margaret Fuller, whose chair he enshrines in his Philadelphia apartment… Like Emerson, he keeps his antennae poked into the cosmos…"

Whitehead's Dilemma — BY Fuller (edited-primary) (../../synergetics-dictionary/w/C20653.md, cite: Oregon University Lecture, 2 Jul'62):

"Then Whitehead said we now come to a surprise… the specialists will not have the capability to integrate the potentials… Somebody would have to put their potential together… I gave this the name of Whitehead's Dilemma."

Korzybski — BY Fuller (edited-primary) (../../synergetics-dictionary/k/C09206.md, attributed to Science and Sanity p.507 in RBF's file):

"A language for its maximum serviceability, must, at least have the structure of the events it attempts to describe; and so science must first discover the structure of events…"
And BY Fuller (../../synergetics/content/front-matter/introduction.md):
"As Korzybski, the founder of general semantics, pointed out, the consequence of its single-tagging is that the rose becomes reflexively considered by man only as a red, white, or pink device…"

Descartes — BY Fuller (edited-primary) (../../synergetics-dictionary/d/C03662.md, RBF to EJA, 31 May 1971):

"Certainly, Descartes discovered the 720° all right, but he didn't realize it was the tetrahedron… and that it could be turned inside and outside."
And BY Fuller (../../synergetics/content/chapters/200.00-synergetics.md, §224.10):
"Descartes: Descartes is the first of record to have discovered that the sum of the angles of a polyhedron is 720°…"
ABOUT Fuller (../../a_fuller_explanation/index.md, Edmondson):
"The 'principle of angular topology' was recognized by the mathematician and philosopher René Descartes (1596), but the title of course is Fuller's."

Aristotle — BY Fuller (../../critical_path/critical_path.md):

"It is also clear that beginning with Plato's pupil Aristotle (384–322 B.C.) and the latter's practical philosophy, the geocentric concept of the celestial system was, after 200 B.C., becoming more and more formally adopted by the 'world's' flat-minded power-structure 'authorities'…"

Pythagoras — BY Fuller (../../critical_path/critical_path.md):

"There may be great significance in the fact that Pythagoras in Greece and Buddha in the Orient occur at the same time—in the sixth century B.C.… they produced mathematical tools and philosophic break-throughs for individual humans forever thereafter to employ."

Newton vs. Einstein (noun/verb) — BY Fuller (../../earth_inc/earth_inc.md):

"We have no use for nouns; and can use only verbs. Newton's instant, noun-thing Universe has been replaced with Einstein's scenario, verb-event, wave-frequency Universe."
Poetic form (../../what_i_have_learned/what_i_have_learned.md; also ../../humans_in_universe/humans_in_universe.md, ../../and_it_came_to_pass_-_not_to_stay/and_it_came_to_pass_-_not_to_stay.md):
"Song of the Dead And the Quick—Newton was a noun And Einstein is a verb."

Russell (named-only) — ABOUT Fuller (../../new_views_on_r_buckminster_fuller/index.md):

"…the vast majority of them did not respond at all, including… such intellectual soul mates as Bertrand Russell, Albert Einstein, and Henry Ford."

Plato (geometry, not philosophy) — ABOUT (Coxeter book, not Fuller) (../../the_man_who_saved_geometry/index.md):

"Plato himself had a model of the world, based on his namesake solids. In his book Timaeus… Plato paired the classical elements with the five regular solids."

Wittgenstein (non-Fuller book) — neither (../../the_design_way/the_design_way.md, Nelson & Stolterman):

"Wittgenstein stated: 'What one acquires here is not a technique; one learns correct judgments…'"
